We see every kind of dental emergency, from small urgent issues to major trauma. Here are the most common reasons patients call us for same-day care, along with what to do while you wait for your appointment.

Severe toothache

A toothache bad enough to keep you up at night is a signal that something serious is happening below the surface, usually deep decay, an abscess, or a cracked tooth. Take 400 to 600 mg of ibuprofen. Avoid chewing on that side. Do not apply aspirin directly to the gum (it burns tissue). Rinse gently with warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of water). Call us immediately so we can get you imaged and treated.

Knocked-out permanent tooth

Time is everything. Teeth reimplanted within 30 minutes have a high chance of reattaching permanently. After 60 minutes the success rate drops significantly.

1. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white chewing part), never the root.
2. Rinse gently with water if dirty. Do not scrub, do not use soap, do not dry it off.
3. If possible, place the tooth back in its socket and hold it in place with light pressure.
4. If you cannot reinsert it, put the tooth in a cup of cold milk or tuck it between your cheek and gum to keep it moist.

Broken, cracked, or chipped tooth

If a piece of your tooth breaks off, save the piece if you can find it (we can sometimes bond it back). Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the cheek over the area if there is swelling. If a sharp edge is cutting your tongue or cheek, cover it with a piece of sugar-free gum or orthodontic wax until you can get to our office. A broken tooth is almost always fixable with a filling, bonding, crown, or root canal plus crown depending on severity.

Lost filling or crown

A filling or crown that falls out leaves the tooth underneath exposed and vulnerable to decay and fracture. If you find the crown, clean it gently and keep it. Call us. If we can see you within 24 to 48 hours, we can often recement the same crown. Over-the-counter temporary cement from a pharmacy can hold a crown in place short-term, but it is not a substitute for professional repair.

Abscess or severe swelling

An abscess is a pocket of infection that shows as a bump on the gum, severe localized pain, and sometimes facial swelling. An abscess is a serious infection that will not resolve on its own and can spread. Rinse with warm salt water. Do not apply heat (it spreads the infection). Take ibuprofen for pain. Call us immediately. We treat the source with a root canal or extraction plus antibiotics. If swelling is spreading to your neck or affecting your breathing or swallowing, go to the hospital ER. That is a medical emergency.

Dental trauma from sports, falls, or accidents

Youth sports injuries and bike or vehicle accidents are frequent causes of emergency dental visits. Get ice on the area to minimize swelling. If there is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze. Collect any tooth fragments. Call us. We prioritize trauma cases and will make time for you today.

Wisdom tooth pain or pericoronitis

A partially erupted wisdom tooth can trap food and bacteria under the gum flap, causing pericoronitis, a painful local infection. Symptoms: pain at the back of the jaw, swollen gum, bad taste, difficulty opening the mouth. Rinse vigorously with salt water to clear debris. Take ibuprofen. Call us. We drain, irrigate, and prescribe antibiotics, then plan removal of the wisdom tooth before the problem recurs.

Pediatric dental emergencies

Kids have their own set of emergencies: knocked-out baby teeth (usually not reimplanted but still needs evaluation), chipped permanent front teeth, severe toothaches from decay, and trauma from falls.
