Modern root canal treatment room at Vedha Family Dentistry, Dover NJ
Painless, modern root canals finished in 1 to 2 comfortable visits

Root Canal Treatment in Dover, NJ. Painless, modern, and tooth-saving.

A root canal is how we save a tooth that has become infected or damaged deep inside. Modern technique makes the procedure about as comfortable as a standard filling. At Vedha Family Dentistry, most root canals finish in one or two visits, and the treated tooth can last a lifetime with a protective crown.

Answer First

A root canal at Vedha Family Dentistry takes one to two visits and is no more uncomfortable than a standard filling thanks to modern anesthetic and technique. The treated tooth also needs a protective crown afterward to prevent fracture. Most PPO plans cover both procedures, and we give you a written estimate with insurance applied before treatment begins.

What a root canal actually does

Inside every tooth is a space called the pulp chamber that contains nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes infected or severely inflamed (from a deep cavity, crack, trauma, or repeated procedures on the same tooth), it causes intense pain that will not resolve on its own. A root canal removes the infected pulp, disinfects the inside of the tooth, and seals it so the infection cannot return.

The tooth stays in the mouth. You keep chewing on it, brushing it, and using it like any other tooth. We follow up with a crown to protect what is now a hollow tooth from future fracture, and the tooth can last the rest of your life.

Signs you may need a root canal

Any of these symptoms suggest pulp infection or inflammation that an exam and X-ray can confirm:

  • Severe toothache, especially one that wakes you at night
  • Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold (more than 30 seconds after the stimulus is gone)
  • A tooth that has darkened or discolored
  • A pimple-like bump on the gum near a specific tooth
  • Facial swelling or tenderness
  • Pain when biting or applying pressure to a tooth
  • A previous large filling that has started to hurt

If you recognize any of these, call us. Waiting allows the infection to progress and often turns a straightforward root canal into an urgent facial infection.

The modern root canal procedure at Vedha

Step 1: Imaging and diagnosis

We take a focused digital X-ray and, when needed, a cone-beam CT scan to see the full anatomy of the tooth and the surrounding bone. Dr. Priya confirms whether a root canal is the right treatment (sometimes a crack is too severe and extraction with an implant is better, and we will tell you honestly).

Step 2: Numbing and isolation

The tooth is thoroughly numbed with local anesthetic. We then isolate it with a soft rubber barrier so the root canal stays dry and clean throughout the procedure.

Step 3: Access, clean, and shape

Dr. Priya creates a small opening in the top of the tooth and removes the infected pulp from each root canal using specialized rotary instruments and modern disinfection protocols.

Step 4: Fill and seal

The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material (gutta-percha) and sealed so bacteria cannot re-enter. The access opening is closed with a filling.

Step 5: Crown placement (2 to 3 weeks later)

Once the tooth has had a few weeks to settle, we place a porcelain crown that covers the entire tooth and protects it from fracture. Without this crown, the root-canal-treated tooth can crack under normal chewing forces.

Cost, insurance, and financing

Most PPO plans cover root canal treatment at 50 to 80 percent of allowed fees, and many also cover the protective crown that follows. We verify your exact coverage before any treatment starts, give you a clear written estimate with insurance applied, and offer Cherry and CareCredit financing for any out-of-pocket amount. You will always know the cost in writing before we begin.

Root canal or extraction: how to choose

Patients occasionally ask if they should just pull the tooth. The honest answer: keep a natural tooth whenever you reasonably can. A successful root canal plus crown preserves the exact tooth you were born with, retains the bone around it, and is almost always more comfortable long-term than an implant. Extraction and implant replacement is a good alternative when a tooth is too cracked or decayed to save, but it is always a second choice compared to saving the natural tooth.

Root Canal Questions

Everything patients ask about modern root canals.

If your question is not here, call us at (973) 366-0311. We love talking teeth.

Does a root canal hurt?+
No. A modern root canal at Vedha is no more uncomfortable than a standard filling. We thoroughly numb the tooth with local anesthetic, and most patients report they felt nothing during the procedure. The pain people associate with root canals is actually the infection beforehand, which the root canal eliminates.
Is root canal treatment covered by insurance?+
Most PPO plans cover root canal treatment at 50 to 80 percent of allowed fees, and many also cover the protective crown that follows. We verify your exact benefits before any treatment begins, give you a clear written estimate with insurance applied, and offer Cherry and CareCredit financing for any out-of-pocket amount.
Why do I need a crown after a root canal?+
A root canal removes the pulp from inside the tooth, which means the tooth is no longer nourished from within. Over time that makes it more brittle and prone to fracture. A crown acts as a helmet that absorbs chewing forces and protects the treated tooth. Without a crown, root canal teeth have a much higher long-term fracture rate. We usually place the crown 2 to 3 weeks after the root canal.
Can a root canal be done in one visit?+
Sometimes yes. Simple cases on front teeth are often completed in a single 60 to 90 minute visit. More complex cases, teeth with multiple roots, or teeth with active severe infection are better completed over two visits: the first to clean and medicate the root canals, and the second to seal them 1 to 2 weeks later.
What happens if I do not get a root canal?+
The infection does not go away on its own. It continues to progress, causing worsening pain, facial swelling, spread of infection to other areas, and eventually loss of the tooth. The only alternatives are root canal treatment (saves the tooth) or extraction (removes the tooth, usually replaced with an implant to prevent bone loss).
How long will a root canal last?+
A properly completed root canal with a well-fitted crown typically lasts the rest of your life. Long-term studies show success rates above 90 percent at 10 years. The key is the timely placement of a crown after the root canal, and regular professional cleanings to keep surrounding tissue healthy.
Can I drive home after a root canal?+
Yes, under local anesthetic alone. You may want the rest of the day quiet but normal activity is fine. If you choose oral sedation for comfort, you need a driver. Most patients take over-the-counter ibuprofen for mild soreness in the first 48 hours.
What are the signs I might need a root canal?+
Call us if you have: severe toothache, lingering sensitivity to hot or cold (more than 30 seconds after the stimulus is gone), a tooth that darkens, a pimple-like bump on the gum near a tooth, facial swelling, or pain when biting. Any of these suggest infection in the tooth pulp that needs evaluation.
