Answer First

A standard adult preventive visit at Vedha includes a full exam, professional cleaning, digital X-rays, oral cancer screening, and fluoride treatment in 60 to 75 minutes. New patients can start with our $150 new patient special, a $500 value. Most PPO plans cover preventive care at 100 percent. We recommend every 6 months for most patients and every 3 to 4 months for patients with gum disease or high cavity risk.

Why preventive care is the highest-value dental investment

Every cavity that gets filled starts as a tiny crack or white spot that could have been stopped with fluoride and a better home routine. Every root canal starts as an unfilled cavity. Every extraction starts as an untreated infection. The work we do in 20 minutes at a cleaning saves most patients thousands of dollars over their lifetime.

Preventive visits at Vedha are not just cleanings. They are also where we catch small problems early: the tiny interproximal cavity between two teeth that would become a filling if we wait, the early gum disease that reverses with two visits of extra cleaning instead of progressing to bone loss, the suspicious spot that gets biopsied and turns out to be nothing (or turns out to be caught at the earliest possible stage).

What is included in a preventive visit at Vedha

Professional cleaning

Our hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar from every surface of every tooth, above and below the gumline. We use ultrasonic scalers for efficient removal and hand instruments for fine detail. The cleaning ends with polishing and a flavor-of-your-choice fluoride application.

Comprehensive exam with Dr. Priya

Dr. Priya reviews your X-rays, examines every tooth, checks your bite, screens for oral cancer, evaluates gum pockets, and checks existing fillings, crowns, and veneers for wear. You get a plain-English summary of anything that needs attention and a clear timeline for when.

Digital X-rays (as indicated)

We take X-rays based on your risk profile: bitewings every 18 to 24 months for most patients, a panoramic film every 3 to 5 years, and a full series only when needed. Our digital sensors use up to 90 percent less radiation than film and deliver instant on-screen results.

Intraoral photos and tech-assisted screening

High-resolution photos of anything interesting so you can see what we see, plus DIAGNOdent laser screening to catch decay before it shows on X-rays.

Oral cancer screening

Every recall visit includes a thorough screening of your lips, tongue, cheeks, palate, and throat. Oral cancers caught at Stage 1 have a 5-year survival rate over 80 percent. We take the 90-second screening seriously on every patient, every visit.

Custom home care coaching

Generic tips (“brush and floss”) help almost no one. We look at your actual mouth, point out the specific areas you are missing, and show you the exact technique for your anatomy. For patients with recurring cavities we often recommend targeted tools like water flossers, specific toothbrush heads, and prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste.

Age-by-age preventive care

Kids (birth to age 12)

First visit by age 1. Cleanings and fluoride every 6 months. Sealants on permanent molars at age 6 and again around age 12. Early orthodontic screening starting at age 7. See our pediatric dentistry page for details.

Teens (13 to 18)

Cleanings and exams every 6 months. Mouthguards for athletes. Orthodontic monitoring and Invisalign when needed. Wisdom tooth evaluation around age 16 to 18.

Adults (19 to 64)

Cleanings every 6 months, more frequently if gum disease is present. Cavity risk management. Oral cancer screening. Bite and wear monitoring for patients who grind. Night guards for heavy grinders.

Seniors (65+)

Cleanings every 3 to 4 months are often indicated, especially for patients on medications that cause dry mouth. Careful monitoring of existing crowns, bridges, and implants. Root surface protection with prescription fluoride.

Preventive care pricing

  • New patient special (cleaning, X-rays, and exam): $150, a $500 value
  • Periodic recall cleaning (existing patients): $180 to $260
  • Pediatric exam, cleaning, and fluoride: $180 to $260
  • Dental sealant (per tooth): $45 to $75
  • Oral cancer screening: included in every exam
  • Custom night guard (for grinding): $350 to $600

Most PPO plans cover preventive visits at 100 percent. We verify your exact benefits before your appointment, and we provide a written estimate for any treatment beyond a routine visit before it begins.

Signs your preventive care needs attention now

Come in sooner if you notice any of these. They rarely resolve on their own:

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath despite good hygiene
  • Receding gums or teeth looking longer
  • Sensitive teeth to cold, hot, or sweet foods
  • A chip, crack, or sharp edge on a tooth
  • A loose filling or crown
  • Any pain, even mild, that has lasted more than a few days
  • A sore, spot, or lump in the mouth that has been there more than 2 weeks

Book your next cleaning

Whether you are overdue for a routine cleaning, are new to the area, or have not been to the dentist in years and want a fresh start with no judgment, we will take care of you. Book your preventive visit or call (973) 366-0311.

Preventive Dentistry Questions

Cleanings, X-rays, and home care, explained honestly.

If your question is not here, call us at (973) 366-0311. We love talking teeth.

How often should I see the dentist?+
Most adults and children should see the dentist every 6 months for a professional cleaning and exam. Patients with gum disease, heavy staining, diabetes, or a history of cavities may need visits every 3 to 4 months. We customize your recall schedule based on actual risk, not a generic rule.
What does a routine cleaning and exam include?+
A Vedha recall visit includes a professional cleaning by a hygienist (plaque and tartar removal above and below the gumline), digital X-rays (annually or biannually), intraoral photos, a comprehensive exam by Dr. Priya, fluoride varnish, an oral cancer screening, and time for questions. Total visit: 60 to 75 minutes.
How much does a preventive dental visit cost?+
New patients can start with our $150 new patient special: a cleaning, X-rays, and exam, a $500 value. Most PPO plans cover preventive care at 100 percent, making routine visits free out-of-pocket. We verify benefits before your appointment so you know the exact cost.
What is gum disease and how do you prevent it?+
Gum disease is a bacterial infection of the gums that progresses from gingivitis (reversible) to periodontitis (irreversible bone loss). Roughly half of U.S. adults have some form of it. Prevention: brushing twice daily, flossing once daily, and professional cleanings every 6 months. Early detection lets us reverse gingivitis before it becomes periodontitis.
Do I really need dental X-rays every year?+
Not necessarily. We take X-rays based on your specific cavity and gum disease risk, not a fixed schedule. Most healthy adults get bitewing X-rays every 18 to 24 months and a full mouth series every 3 to 5 years. Kids with active cavity risk may get them more often. Our digital sensors use up to 90 percent less radiation than traditional film.
What are the signs of a problem that should not wait until my next cleaning?+
Call us sooner if you have: bleeding gums that do not resolve in 10 days of improved flossing, a toothache that wakes you at night, sensitivity to cold that lingers more than 30 seconds, bad taste in your mouth that does not go away, or a visible bump or spot on your gum. These signal problems that get more expensive the longer they wait.
How do I fix bad breath permanently?+
Bad breath (halitosis) usually has one of three causes: bacteria on the tongue, gum disease, or untreated decay. A professional cleaning plus a tongue scraper at home resolves about 70 percent of cases within a week. Persistent bad breath after good hygiene deserves an exam. We find the cause and fix it, instead of masking with mints.
Are deep cleanings (scaling and root planing) necessary?+
Only if you have active gum disease. A deep cleaning treats periodontitis by removing tartar and bacteria from below the gumline, then polishing root surfaces so gums can reattach. It is not the same as a routine cleaning. It is usually covered partially by insurance, and we provide a written estimate before any treatment begins. We only recommend deep cleanings when X-rays and measurements show they are clinically necessary.
